Following the departure of Barry Gray, Newry City AFC are delighted to appoint Darren Mullen as First Team Manager along with Ray Byrne and Jervis McCaul as coaches.

Newry City AFC Chairman Martin McLoughlin commented “After a hectic weekend today became a day of change at NCAFC. Firstly, let me place on record our thanks to Barry, Mark and Ciaran for all of the hard work they have done during their tenure.

“I am well aware of the time that they have put in, in a bid to make the club a success and the sacrifices that they have made to try and make that possible. I have no doubt that circumstances beyond their control in particular injuries to key players has hindered their efforts.

“As a club our aim is to keep NCAFC in senior football and to challenge for league titles. Therefore, we feel it is crucial to appoint a successor who has knowledge of the league and especially the setup at the club.

“With the excitement of our new 4g training facility nearing completion we are in a great position off the pitch but need the results on the pitch that have so far been avoiding us.

“From previous experience of Darren and his backroom staff I know they will be under no illusion about the task ahead and will be keen to get the job started.

Hopefully this change will give us the boost we need and we can restart our season from here.”

Darren Mullen commented “This has all happened very quickly but I had no hesitation in agreeing to help the club. They say you should never go back in football but Raymond Byrne, Jervis McCaul and I all have a huge emotional attachment to this club.

“Results haven’t been good but I believe the squad that’s there is a lot better than the current league position shows. The fans have always been brilliant but we need to start giving them something to sing about. As a group we will be working hard to get Newry City back where they belong and that work starts this Tuesday night.”

NCAFC Academy Results Round-Up

The Newry City AFC Academy were back in action last weekend:

Newry City AFC U9 had a very competitive encounter against Valley Rangers on Saturday. Teamwork and resilience were evident from start to finish with lots of good football played by both sides. Newry goals coming from Danny King, Zachary McCormack, Darragh O’Neill and Cayden McSherry.

Newry City AFC u11 v Camlough Rovers 2014 at the Camlough stadium.

Goal scorers – Karol Oleszczuk x 1, Rhys Hempkin x 1, Deaglàn Finnegan x1

A fantastic game of football saw a 3-3 draw between 2 good teams. The game started evenly but Camlough went 2 goals up curtesy of 2 long range shots. Newry kept their chins up to pull a goal back before half time with a well worked goal from Karol Oleszczuk.

Newry started the second half really well and were the more dominant team throughout but whilst creating a lot of chances, they couldn’t find the net. That was until Rhys Hempkin broke free on the left and hit a screamer into the far corner.

Newry kept pressing for a winner but Camlough scored very late with a contested corner. Newry didn’t give up and with the last move of the match – up stepped Deaglàn Finnegan to score with a long range shot. Great scenes at the end of a great game of football.

Man of the match – Karol Oleszczuk

Newry Team: Rory O’Hagan (GK), Max McKeown, Rio Carroll, Daniel Drumm, Noah Kearns, Daìthì Gorman, Karol Oleszczuk, Reuben Bentley-McKevitt, Deaglàn Finnegan, Rhys Hempkin, Harry Owens, Lorcan Haughey

Newry City AFC U15 v Glendowan U15

Newry got off to the better start with Tomas Devlin once again getting on the end of a Mathieu Kavanagh free kick to open the scoring.

As the first half progressed Newry was on top with Eoin, Mathieu and Ross all covering a lot of ground in the middle of the pitch.

The back 3 consisting of Frankie, Tomas and Darragh patrolled the defence really well, as the game progressed Jamie Frank’s and Ronan McCann grew into it creating great chances for the 2 forwards.

Lee Clarke sacrificed himself to get on the end of a dead ball to slip it to Jacob Toner who put it away for Newry’s second goal.

With minutes left of the 1st half Ethan Kelly made 3 great consecutive saves to keep Newry on top, going into half time the more dominant team.

Second half started with Glendowan starting the stronger being rewarded soon after with a goal.

Newry weathered the storm well and could have extended their lead but good goal keeping from Glendowan and a post denied them.

Glendowan equalised with 10mins left on the clock after 2quick saves from Kieran King unfortunately resulted in the ball landing to a Glendowan player to roll into the net.

One final opportunity fell to Mikey Bannon who worked the keeper but Newry just couldn’t get it over the line.

Great overall game and on another day the score line could have been more reflective of Newry’s work rate and opportunities.

Stand out performances from Lee Clark and Eoin Taylor. Final score 2-2.

Newry City AFC U16 V Coleraine U16

In the first 10 minutes Coleraine took the lead but Newry remained disciplined and made it difficult to Coleraine to break the team down while the Newry forwards picked their moments to go and break on Coleraine though unfortunately late on in the half Coleraine fully found their feet and took control finding the net twice before the half time whistle before putting the game to bed early in the second half with their fourth goal.

NCAFC Academy Results Round-Up

The Newry City AFC Academy were back in action last weekend:

Newry City AFC U9 had some great performances from the on Saturday against Camlough Rovers and Meadowlands. Lots of free-flowing football on show and lots of goals to top it off.

Newry City AFC u11 v Oxford Sunnyside 2014 colts at Lisburn Rec 2B

A tough match for Newry against Oxford Sunnyside. The game was very scrappy and stop/start but the Newry lads battled on regardless but despite numerous chances – they couldn’t break the deadlock. Oxford Sunnyside took a 2-0 lead into half time with a clearance/shot and a well worked goal.

After the break, Newry continued to press but couldn’t put the ball in the net. Oxford Sunnyside scored a third right at the end with a counter attack when Newry were pressing. A frustrating game for Newry but we can learn from it.

Next game – Camlough Rovers 2014 v Newry City at Camlough stadium at 9am on 28th September

Newry City AFC u12 v Ballymacash U12

Newry started well and created plenty of chances in the first half. Luke Dinsmore was able to put one of these away to put the u12s in the lead going into the break.

In the second half, Newry defended well and also created more chances with Tom Woollard hitting the crossbar and Corey Rooney hitting the post. Ballymacash managed to equalise from a corner with ten minutes remaining. The game had a dramatic ending with what looked like a certain penalty for Newry but it wasn’t to be.

FT 1-1 and still unbeaten in the Lisburn League.

Newry City AFC U15 v Hillsborough boys Saturday 21/9/24

Newry got off to a good start with a goal from Tomas Devlin 5mins into the game.

Newry dominated the next 20 mins with multiple scoring chances unfortunately none materialised and Hillsborough boys got a goal just before the half time break.

In the second half Hillsborough got off to a better start and were rewarded with a free kick scoring a great goal. Newry made a few changes to try and get the equaliser, a few opportunities were created but none hit the back of the net! In the end Hillsborough hit them again with another free kick to end the game 3-1 in their favour.

Stand out players for Newry: Tomas Devlin and Darragh Rigley

Newry City AFC U16 V Glentoran U16

After a tough first half in which we dug deep and made it difficult to break us down, Glentoran then broke us down and took the lead with 10 minutes to go before half time but we reacted well and created a couple of chances and brought out a top class save from the Glentoran keeper to keep it at 1-0 at half time.

In the second half we made it again difficult for Glentoran while creating a chance on the break but 15 minutes into the second half Glentoran doubled their lead but again a good reaction from us helped us pull a goal back from a good strike from just outside the box but just 2 minutes later Glentoran killed the game from a corner.
