Coleraine Reserves 5-0 Newry City AFC 1st Round Intermediate Cup.

Newry City AFC suffered a heavy defeat on Saturday at a windy and rainswept Anderson Park Coleraine against formidable opposition in Coleraine Reserves who sit at the top of the Premiereship reserve table and who were fresh from a victory against Linfield Swifts earlier in the week. Though Newry opened brightly they were soon on the back foot and had to clear a shot off the line following Coleraine’s first corner of the match. The opening goal came in the fifteenth minute from the penalty spot when a Newry player was judged to have handled the ball even though he was lying on the ground at the time. Newry’s protests were in vain and Coleraine’s Stewart Glasgow thundered the penalty kick past Peter Murphy. Newry suffered a further blow before the game restarted as centre forward Neil Barr had to be replaced by Peter Thompson after picking up a hamstring injury which could keep him out for a couple of weeks.

The second Coleraine goal came after twenty five minutes and again it was Glasgow who scored from the penalty spot. This time there was no doubt about the award as a Newry defender brought down the Coleraine left winger Hugo Baptista. Baptista gave an excellent performance on the day and could well be one to look out for in the future. Newry did their  best to get back into the game with Jimmy Walker’s shot being deflected wide for a fruitless corner.

Newry had to make a further reshuffle after 38 minutes when right back Niall Crilly had to be replaced by Paul McElroy after picking up an injury. Things got even worse for the visitors when Baptista forced a fine diving save from Murphy and Adam Mullen reacted first to fire home the rebound and give the homesters a three goal lead before the break.

Newry began the second half on the attack with Lonnie Larkin escaping two tackles before firing just wide. However this was not to be Newry’s day and Coleraine fired home their fourth goal from twenty five yards after 53 minutes agaIn through Mullen.

At this stage the weather turned really nasty and there was little chance for either team to play good football. Newry had a few chances, notably through sub Shane Lundy and from a Jimmy Walker free kick which cleared the home cross bar.

The scoring was completed when with five minutes remaining Coleraine broke down the right and Baptista fired home from close range.

Next up for Newry is a league fixture at The Showgrounds v Oxford Sunnyside on Saturday 2nd November with a 2:15pm Kick off.

Newry City AFC Team: Murphy, Crilly, Anderson, Annett, McCaul, Walker, Edgar, McMahon, Barr, Patton, Larkin. Subs: McElroy, Lundy, Thompson.

Newry win to stay top of the table!

Newry City cemented their place at the top of Mid Ulster Intermediate B with a comprehensive victory over Broomhedge at a damp Showground’s on Saturday.

It took only six minutes for the home side to open the scoring. From the middle of the field Graeme Edgar released defender David Anderson in an advanced position wide on the left. Anderson slipped a pass inside to winger John Smyth who took the ball into the box before unleashing a fierce drive into the roof of the Broomhedge net to put Newry 1-0 up. Given the respective table positions and goal difference the home spectator’s could have been forgiven for expecting a rout after this early goal.

However this was not to be as for the next half hour the home players took turns at making and wasting good goal chances with at least a half dozen opportunities spurned. When the second goal did eventually come it was to be Anderson again as the instigator. Taking a short throw from keeper Peter Murphy, Anderson quickly spotted his opposite full back Niall Crilly in space on the opposite wing. Crilly took Andersons driven pass in his stride and made ground before crossing to Mark Lowry on the edge of the Broomhedge box. Lowry met the cross first time using the pace on the cross to side foot his shot to the corner of the net to make the half time score 2-0 for Newry.

Newry increased their advantage 10 minutes into the second half. Chris McMahon won the ball inside his own half before splitting the Broomhedge defence with an incisive pass which Mark Patton just reached in his race with the Broomhedge keeper Darren Addis. With the keeper now beaten and only a defender between him and the net Patton unselfishly passed the ball wide to Lowry who drove the ball first time into an empty net to put Newry 3-0 up.

Lowry completed his hat trick on 75 minutes when he was the first to react after Addis flapped at a Smyth free kick from the edge of the penalty area. When Addis could only knock Smyth’s shot down Lowry was quickly onto the loose ball which he slammed to the back of the net from inside the six yard box for his third and Newry’s fourth goal.

Although clear winners Newry struggled to find any rhythm in this game and although the management will be glad to win and secure another 3 points, thanks to the hat trick from Man of the Match Mark Lowry, they will be aware that there are sterner challenges to come starting with next Saturdays Intermediate Cup tie away to Coleraine Reserves. Newry City Travel Club bus will be departing from the Stonebridge at 10:30AM Sharp!! All are welcome.

Newry City AFC Team: Peter Murphy, Niall Crilly, David Anderson, Joel Annett, Conor McCaul, Jimmy Walker (McElroy), Graeme Edgar (Larkin), Chris McMahon, Neil Barr (Patton), Mark Lowry, John Smyth  Subs: Mark Patton, Shane Lundy, Lonnie Larkin, Paul McElroy.

Newry into Third Round of Irish Cup!!

Newry City AFC moved into the third round of the Irish Cup on Saturday with a comprehensive defeat of fellow Mid Ulster Intermediate B side Richhill on Saturday. This was a game which Newry dominated from the start their first good chance coming after only four minutes when a low drive from the edge of the box by Jimmy Walker, after he had received a short free kick from John Smyth, was deflected over the home sides bar with only inches to spare. Chances came and went for almost the rest of the half for Newry with the Richhill net seemingly leading a charmed life.

On nine minutes the Newry midfield of Chris McMahon, Graeme Edgar and Jimmy Walker combined in a passing movement to release Mark Lowry inside the box, his shot beating both the keeper and the post to fly wide. Lowry was again involved in the next chance five minutes later when he chased a long clearance from the Newry keeper Shane McCoy to force a corner. Ever alert to a quick pass Smyth played the corner short to Niall Crilly who shot on goal only for his effort to again be deflected over the home bar for a another corner. This time Smyth’s cross bounced around the box until Conor McCaul managed to get a clear shot, alas off target. Right back Crilly was enjoying lots of freedom on the Newry wing and he linked up with McMahon on 24 minutes to force another Smyth corner. This time Smyth drove the ball low and hard across the face of the goal somehow missing everyone and going out for a home throw in.

The Richhill dam eventually burst on 40 minutes when Edgar released Smyth with a quick throw in over the head of home defence Smyth winning yet another corner this time on the Newry left. The corner taken Walker evaded the Richhill defenders and found Smyth who nodded home at the far post to put Newry 1-0 up. Perhaps momentarily content that their domination had been turned into a lead Newry were caught cold almost immediately when a Richhill corner was not properly cleared and a snapshot from the edge of a crowded Newry box with McCoy unsighted meant that the keeper could only deflect the shot onto the inside of the post, the rebound just about crossing the goal line before McCoy could get his hands to it.

Newry regained the lead immediately after the restart and again Crilly and McMahon were at the heart of the move.  Crilly picked the ball up deep in his own half and found McMahon on the right side of midfield. McMahon immediately drilled a low cross field pass to Smyth who had perfectly timed his left wing run from deep allowing him to smash a first time shot into the Richhill net to regain the Newry one goal advantage.  This time there was no way back for Richhill as Newry piled the pressure on continually creating goal chances.  On the hour mark Crilly who was having a super game released McMahon with a clear sight of goal. When his shot from outside the area was flapped at by the home keeper McMahon was first onto the rebound and was unlucky to have his effort blocked for a corner.

On 67 minutes a sweeping attack started deep in his own half by Edgar was almost finished by the same player. Releasing Neil Barr Edgar kept pace as Barr made ground down the right wing and was on hand to collect his cross on the edge of the box forcing the Richhill keeper into a fine save low to his left.   Newry were now totally on top combining at will with neat passing movements.  On 70 minutes Edgar and McCaul released David Anderson wide on the left. Anderson cut inside and travelled infield before playing a reverse pass to Peter Thompson who’s shot was charged down by the home defence.

With 15 minutes left Smyth, McMahon and Walker linked up in a passing movement which again released Thompson for a shot which this time was saved by the home keeper. Minutes later a similar attack between Walker McMahon and Lowry found Smyth in space at the far post and when his hat trick seemed likely he could only find the side netting with his shot. However his third goal was not long in coming. Lowry showed great determination chasing down on the home defence and when he forced the defender into a mistake Smyth quickly collected the now loose ball and made a few yards forward before blasting the ball high into the roof of the Richhill net for Newry’s third and final goal and his hat trick.

MOTM John Smyth in action!
MOTM John Smyth in action!

This was a fine team performance from Newry. Shane McCoy in nets was a very able deputy for the unavailable Murphy, in defence McCaul, Annett and later McElroy won everything that came their way whilst Crilly and Anderson where often the starting point for Newry attacks. The midfield of Edgar, McMahon, Walker and Larkin were responsible for many crisp passing movements whilst Lowry, Barr and Thompson worked hard up front. However the premiere display was that of Man of the Match John Smyth who provided the goals to win the game.

Next up for City is an away match v Broomedge in the league on Saturday 19th October. The NCAFC Travel Bus will be departing the Stonebridge at 1pm Sharp. All are welcome!
