Newry aiming to make their mark

Newry City AFC is currently participating in the McDonalds/IFA Foundation Club Mark programme. The aim of this programme is to support the development of clubs and to implement good practice policies and procedures within them. The scheme prepares clubs to successfully work towards the Excellence Mark.

Former Newry City coach Seamus Heath, who is now the Newry & Mourne District Grassroots Development officer for the IFA, said of the scheme:

“The McDonald’s foundation club-mark programme provides a clear and structured approach to improving and developing local clubs.

“The value based coaching section demonstrates to the clubs partners, parents and young people that your club is child friendly, safe and will develop all players as footballers and citizens.

“Mentoring of the coaches is providing both confidence and positive coaching to them as they progress on their coaching pathway while developing both themselves and the players.”

And speaking of the progress that Newry City AFC are making as a club, Seamus said:

“Newry have been through a difficult period over the last few years, having gone from an Irish premier league side to closure of their ground and collapse of all their teams. But things are really looking up for them now.

“It’s great to see top local coach and Newry City AFC manager Darren Mullen taking a keen interest in all the club’s programmes with his help, advise and words of wisdom to the clubs future players.

“Newry U15 Coach Colm Murphy, who is on the programme, is your typical volunteer who is the lifeblood of our sport and provides so much to his club. Colm is both a parent, coach and manager to one of the teams. Whilst working all day, miles from home, Colm plans his session, rushes home, collects his son and heads straight to training. Real football people!”

Newry first team manager Darren Mullen told newrycityafc.co.uk he is delighted with the work Seamus has been doing with the club:

“Seamus has been doing terrific work with our U15s for the past five weeks and they have certainly benefited from his quality coaching sessions. Not only are the lads improving but they are enjoying working with someone of Seamus’ experience. As a former coach at the club, he appreciates what we are trying to do and his help in this initiative is greatly appreciated,” Darren said.

He added, “The other teams within the club will also be taking part in some of his sessions and that can only improve their chances of progressing at the club. It also gives the existing youth coaches the chance to see different types of drills which can only be good for their development.”

Newry City U15 6 – 1 Tandragee Rovers U15

Newry U15’s played their first league game against Tandragee on Saturday last in Rathfriland. With a depleted squad due to a number of reasons Newry were to field with 10 players on this their first game in the Mid Ulster league. With the odds stacked against them Newry started strong and found themselves one goal up within 10 minutes. After some strong defensive play Newry again surprised their opponents by going 2 goals up with a fantastic long range effort. Tandragee pulled a goal back but Newry answered straight away going up field to add their third goal.

The second half started with Newry attacking from the kick off and it wasn’t long until they scored a fourth with some fine passing football. This really spurred the lads on and they added two more before the end to achieve a flattering 6-1 win in this their first venture in the Mid Ulster U-15 league.

With a mixture of new signings and established players the team really settled quick and it has showed that there will be great competition for places when those that missed Saturdays game return. Credit due to all who played their hearts out to achieve a remarkable result and showed great team spirit and effort. It must be said also that Tandragee showed great sportsmanship and we must thank them for a very sporting match and the best wishes from their Management and supporters to all the Newry lads at the end of the match.

Good luck Newry City Ladies

With just one game to go in the league, Newry City Ladies and Linfield are equal on points.

The Newry Ladies will take on Mid Ulster Ladies in their final league fixture of the season on September 9th. The same evening, Linfield are away to Glentoran.

Also, next Thursday, September 3rd, The Ladies will face Mid Ulster Ladies in the final of the Mid Ulster Cup at Stangmore park in Dungannon. KO 7.30pm.

It is with great pleasure that we can announce the appointment of Grainne Walsh as the club’s new physiotherapist.

LogoColorTextBelowGrainne comes to us with a very impressive CV, having previously worked with the Australian Kangaroos Rugby League team for the Rugby League World Cup in 2013, Aughlisnafin GAC, Dundrum GAC, Castlewellan GAC and London Senior Hurling GAC.

You can find out more about Grainne and the services she offers on her Twitter page @GWSportsClinic and her Facebook page GWSportsInjuryClinic.

We are also pleased to welcome physiotherapist student Janine Hegarty on board at the club. Janine is currently studying at Teeside University in Middlesbrough and she will be working alongside Grainne to gain some experience in this field until she returns to her studies next month.

Newry City AFC are very much looking forward to working with both of the girls in what promises to be a great season ahead.

Senior Team Manager Darren Mullen said of the new appointments:

“We are delighted to welcome Grainne and Janine to the club. They have both proved their worth in the short period of time they have been involved with us and have helped add to the professionalism we are trying to instil at the club.

“Grainne has extensive experience in dealing with sports injuries and we are happy to help Janine in the course of her education.”

He added, “I have no doubt they will continue to provide great assistance off the pitch to allow every possible opportunity for us to succeed on it.”

Newry City AFC 6 – 1 Tullyvallen FC

The home side hit the front as early as the 3rd minute when the lively Sean McMullan guided the ball past Luke Bush in the Tullyvallen goal.

Despite the early setback, the visitors continued to play some attractive football and got a well deserved equaliser from Kyle Morton in the 10th minute.

McMullan showed his value with a second score in the 18th minute and Mark Lowry with a shot from a very wide angle that rolled into a unguarded goal, ten minutes before the interval, put Newry into a comfortable advantage.

After the resumption Declan Carville with a superb lob put City further ahead. Tullyvallen fought with spirit and determination but the home side were dominating possession and it was no surprise when second half substitute Keith Johnston grabbed the fifth goal. Newry had introduced Johnston with Niall Crilly, Conor Sloan and Paulius Smaryginas as subs earlier in the half and they were making their presence felt as they pushed forward at every opportunity against a rapidly tiring visiting rearguard. An OG from a Tullyvallen defender completed the scoring.

Newry City AFC: Peter Murphy, Ben Wilson, Graeme Edgar, Chris McMahon, Neil Mullen, Stephen Wylie, Thomas McCann, Mark Lowry, Declan Carville, Sean McMullan, and Stephen McCabe.
Subs: Keith Johnston, Conor Sloan, Paulius Smaryginas, Niall Crilly, Conor McCaul, and Kenny Kearns.
