Newry Reserves beat Valley!

Newry City Reserves management team, Gary Redpath and Kevin Darcy were delighted to come away from Wednesday night’s league game at The Showground’s with Valley Rangers having secured a narrow victory “It’s great to get three points from that game having played with such a young team. The players are showing great desire and hunger in training and are now carrying this onto the pitch and with commitment that will translate into wins. Tonight was a good physical contest and no quarter was given. There was some good hard tackling from both teams with Micky Hastewell leading our boys with some inspirational challenges. It took us a while to get a foothold in the game but when we got settled we started passing the ball about. This second season at this level has definitely seen an improvement in our play”

The match itself was level in nearly every aspect bar the final goal count with both teams trading blow for blow. On eight minutes Valley had their first scoring chance when an ill judged back pass was intercepted by Johnny Newell who had his shot well saved by the advancing Chris Davison in the Newry goal. Play then swung to the other end where neat passing between Josh Durnin and Micky Maguire presented Joe Campbell with a shooting chance on the edge of the area, his dipping shot tipped over the crossbar by Nathan Heggarty.  On the half hour mark the Valley defence were nearly caught out by a long pass from Durnin which Campbell latched on to midway inside the half with Alan Johnson the only covering defender, Johnson doing well to force Campbell wide from where his shot was saved at the near post by Heggarty. With half time approaching Valley created a great chance to take the lead when Robert McCullough broke down the left wing, cut back along the end line and with options in the box chose to shoot his effort  from a narrow angle hitting the side netting. And as with the pattern of play there was still time for a chance at the other end. Neat passing between Durnin and Campbell was interrupted by crude challenge on Campbell on the edge of the box. When Campbell’s free kick was charged down by the Valley wall Durnin was the first to react unfortunate to see his low drive from outside the box slam into the base of the post with Heggarty beaten.

Newry introduced the experienced Niall Crilly after the break and he was to have a major influence on the game. On 53 minutes Campbell broke down the right before laying the ball back to Crilly who swung a dangerous low cross along the face of the Valley goal which required some excellent defending to clear. This should have been a warning to Valley as to what was to come but first they had a great chance at the other end. Newell chipped a perfect pass over the Newry defence which Richard Graham ran on to. With Davison quickly off his line Graham attempted to lob him unfortunate to see the ball come down the wrong side of the crossbar. On 65 minutes Crilly won a crunching tackle on the half way line before playing a classic  one two with Aaron Brilly. Now free on the right wing Crilly crossed to the penalty spot from where Hastewell powered his headed effort just wide. Crilly was not to be denied. With 15 minutes remaining Kevin Moan strode from his central defence position and played a perfect defence splitting pass into the path of the wide running Crilly. Crilly continued his run to the by line from where he fired a low cross into the Valley box where it was met by Mark McAteer who finished clinically for what turned out to be the decisive goal. That however was not until one more chance at the other end when a home defender sliced his clearance and with Newell about to pounce Rian Hand appeared from nowhere to sweep up the trouble securing an excellent win for Newry which sees them move into a comfortable early season mid table position with seven points from four games.

Cup Final Reactions!!

Following Newry City AFC Reserves fantastic cup final win, Newrycityafc.co.uk caught up with Manager Gary Redpath and each team member to get their reactions on the big win.

Gary Redpath Manager Gary Redpath (Left) To me, it’s all about the development of all of our young players giving them the belief and confidence to fulfil their potential and with the right attitude go on to play for Newry at the highest level. This was evident on Friday night as we went a goal down but continued to play our football throughout and the lads were duly rewarded for their efforts. They have trained hard all season and their fitness levels combined with their footballing ability shone through to bring a well-deserved trophy back to the Showgrounds. On behalf of all at Newry City AFC, I would like to thank a well organised Banbridge Rangers team for making this a memorable final. Finally a huge thank you to the rest of the Reserves coaching staff; Kevin, Stevie and Marty and also our unwavering travelling supporters along with the lads behind the scenes at NCAFC.

I’m unbelievably proud to be the first player to lift a trophy for the newly reformed Newry City. It meant the world to me and it’s something il never forget. The management have been fantastic this season and it’s shown by winning the Wilmor Johnston cup. Personally id like to thank them for everything they’ve done thus far this season. Couldn’t have done it without them.

Really means a lot to be part of the team winning for the first trophy under the newly formed club. Hope there’s many more to come. Delighted for Gary, Kevin, Stevey and Marty as their hard work and faith in a young team paid off. It was definitely the biggest game I’ve won in my life and I’m still buzzing! Plus, a mention must go to the fans travelling down to watch and cheer on the boys. Unbelievable.

It was great to be able to play a part in bringing home the first piece if silverware to Newry city AFC. It speaks volumes about the management team and just how far the club as a whole has come in the space if 8/9 months, hopefully it’s the first of many trophies for the club!

I am very proud to say I was part of the first team to bring a trophy back to Newry City AFC and I am equally happy and grateful for the management who always give 100% into supporting joelannettand believing us, just as they did on Friday night.

I don’t actually know what to say, winning the cup final was unbelievable and the way we won it goes to show that there is a great bunch of lads who never give up no matter what and the management have done a fantastic job.

It is an honour to be part of the first ever NCAFC cup winning team. To win the game the way we did showed how much character the team has to never give up. Yet again the fans showed their loyalty throughout the game. It will stick with me for life and hopefully there will be more big games to come.

It is a privilege to play for my home club and to be a part of the first winning team to bring a trophy back to the Showgrounds as the newly formed NCAFC. I would personally like to thank the management staff, especially Gary & Kevin who have done a lot of work behind the scenes to get us where we are today.

I am very proud to be able to say I play for Newry City AFC Reserves and that I helped bring the first trophy back to the Showgrounds. It wouldn’t have possible without the hard work of every single player and especially the hard work of our management staff; Gary, Kevin, Marty and Steve who have supported us all the way. It is definitely an occasion that I will never forget and I hope it is the first of many trophies I will be involved in bringing back to the Showgrounds. P.s, Moyes would need to watch his place a MUFC as Redpath is on fire!

It’s a great privilege to make history winning the first cup of the new NCAFC era, this season has been particular hard on me due to injuries and this made it all worth it, also I’d like the thank all the management for giving me an opportunity for being part of the club, Also a massive thank you to Gary Redpath who was a major reason why I decided to come back and play football after my injury.

Josh Durnin: I am so proud to be part of the team winning NCAFCs first trophy, it meant a lot to me given I am so young compared to the rest of the boys so I am very grateful that Gary and the boys gave me a chance.
