John Grant signs at the Showgrounds

John Grant signs at the Showgrounds

Newry manager Darren Mullen has secured the services of Camlough native John Grant.

The 25-year-old, who recently returned home after a three-year spell living in Australia, has experience playing at Championship level with Lurgan Celtic and was also previously on the books at Camlough Rovers.

He is a versatile player who can be deployed anywhere across the middle of the park or up front but is most effective in central midfield.

“John’s a former youth player at Newry and was always an impressive footballer. Not just for his physicality but his ability on the ball as well,” City boss Darren Mullen said.

“We played against him when he was with Camlough on numerous occasions and he caused us a lot of problems so we’re delighted to have him on board. We actually tried to sign him a couple of times unsuccessfully before he left for Australia, but he made contact with us to say he was coming home. He’s a signing that we need because even last season we were lacking that bit of physical presence and he’ll certainly give us that at 6 foot five!

“He’s still only 25 and has his best years are ahead of him. He knows the rest of the lads and I think he’ll do well for us this year.”

Meanwhile John said signing for Newry was “an easy decision to make” and is looking forward to joining up with the squad in pre-season.

“I know most of the lads already. Newry are a good side, they play at a good standard of football and it’s a great pitch here at the Showgrounds, so everything fits for me,” stated Grant.

“I was in the Championship One before with Lurgan Celtic a good few years ago so I know what sort of challenges to expect in this league. It’s a good standard and a hard league to get out of but hopefully we’ll get back up to the Premiership because that’s our main goal obviously.

“I look at what Darren has done here over the last couple of seasons with back-to-back promotions and I’d love to be a part of a promotion winning team here at Newry and can’t wait to get started.”

Coleman extends contract

Newry City manager Darren Mullen has been boosted by the news that goalkeeper Andy Coleman has penned another one year deal to remain at the Showgrounds.

The 33-year-old re-joined the club last summer after making the move from Dungannon Swifts.

Speaking to newrycityafc.co.uk, the vastly experienced shot-stopper said is eager to help his hometown club get promoted back to the Premiership again.

“I’d just like to thank Darren Mullen for the time and effort he has put into getting me signed up for the upcoming season.

“I spoke to some Premiership clubs but in the end it was an easy decision to make. As I said when I signed for the club last year, my family have always sat in the stands at the games, it’s my hometown club and it’s bigger and better than it ever was before. The crowds have been brilliant and I look forward to helping the club bounce back up to The Premiership.

“A big part of me staying was also down to working with Dee Mc Corry. His training is brilliant, some of the best I’ve ever had and I can’t wait to get started again in pre-season.”

City boss Darren Mullen added, “This is another huge boost for the club. Andy has played the vast majority of his career in The Premiership and has shown tremendous loyalty and faith in signing his new deal. We will need leaders throughout the team this season and I’ve no doubt Andy will be one of those for us.”

Newry add Firepower

Newry City AFC are delighted to welcome Striker Stephen McCavitt on a year-long loan deal from Glenavon FC.

Newry Manager Darren Mullen commented “Our lack of goals last season cost us dearly so it’s an area that needed immediate improvement. Stephen will the first signing in that area and I’m delighted to get the deal done. We’ve known about him for a while especially after scoring a screamer against us in the Mid-Ulster Cup Final a few years ago. He joins us after finishing top scorer in the Premier Intermediate League so I’ve no doubt he’s ready for the step up. I know there were numerous other clubs interested in him but he has shown an obvious desire to play for us. I’d like to thank Glenavon manager Gary Hamilton for his help with this deal.”

Stephen McCavitt “I am happy to have signed for Newry City and can’t wait to get going at The Showgrounds. I was delighted when I got the phone call from Darren asking did I want to come down and play at Newry. I look forward to meeting everyone and hopefully I can score goals and do well at this great club.”

John Boyle Re-Signs

As the rebuilding continues we are delighted to announce the re-signing of a fans favourite, John Boyle. Newry Manager Darren Mullen commented “It’s fair to say Boyler has been one of the best signings we have made over the past 6 years. He is a natural leader and a player that is held in the highest regards by his teammates. His new deal is a huge boost for the club as I know there was interest in him from other clubs. Like the other lads that have signed he believes that we can be a real force in The Championship this year and I’m delighted to have him on board for at least another season.”

John Boyle commented, “I am pleased to have signed a new contract with the club as I feel I have unfinished business. I have had an enjoyable and successful couple of years at Newry and I didn’t want relegation to be my final chapter. A lot of people work very hard for the club so they and the supporters deserve better than what happened last year. I am looking forward to getting started to put things right and you can be sure I’ll do my upmost to bring success for the supporters.”

Lavery re-signs at The Showgrounds

Work never stops for a manager as Darren Mullen continues to build his squad for next season by securing the signature of Stefan Lavery for another year.

Mullen commented “Stefan will be the first to admit that his ankle injury hampered him last season but he still showed enough quality to ensure that we wanted to retain his services. He’s a player with a wealth of experience and fitted in extremely well to our group last season so I’m delighted he has agreed to sign a new deal. I’ve no doubt he will prove his quality again this year.”

Stefan Lavery “I’m delighted to have signed again at The Showgrounds, from the minute I put on a Newry City jersey the support and backing from the club and fans has been great, so it was an easy decision!

The squad of players Darren has retained shows the determination to get back up into the Premier League and I look forward to being part of that and I know I speak for all the players that we will work hard to ensure Newry City hit the ground running come the start of the season.”
