The club has been informed by the NI Football League that our home game against Linfield FC scheduled to take place on Friday 14th December will be moved to a 1pm kick off on Saturday 15th December IF Linfield are involved in the League Cup Semi-Final on the preceding Tuesday, 11th December. This cannot be confirmed until Linfield play Portadown  FC in the Quarter Final on Tuesday 4th.

Newry City AFC would like to apologise to anyone inconvenienced by this potential change which is outside the control of the club.

Newry will hope to bounce back from Friday night’s 2-0 defeat to Institute this evening when they take on Warrenpoint Town in the quarter final of the Mid Ulster Cup at the Showgrounds, kicking off at 7:45pm.

City defender Darren King spoke of the importance of picking up a positive result in the local derby.

“We need to get the Institute game out of our system as we let ourselves and the supporters down on Friday night with an uncharacteristic home performance. Secondly, to ensure we progress in the cup and try to build up some momentum again. And finally to get a result in order to give the squad, coaching staff and supporters a lift as you always want to be on top in a local derby,” said King.

Third placed Coleraine had to settle for a point from this visit to Newry City as new boss Rodney McAree awaits his first win.
The Bannsiders almost moved in front after five minutes through Stephen Lowry who turned the ball against an upright after Ian Parkhill had knocked on a sliced Andy Coleman clearance.
However, the deadlock was broken in Newry’s favour on 19 minutes when a free-kick was whipped into the area for Declan Carville to head home into the top corner.
In attempt to get back into the game Coleraine saw efforts from Ciaron Harkin and Darren McCauley dealt with while Parkhill saw a ball driven across the face of goal before going wide.
McCauley then clipped the top of the crossbar before, on 57 minutes, Parkhill split the Newry defence with a fantastic through ball for Aaron Burns to make no mistake with a clinical finish.
Chasing all three points, McAree’s side could have edged in front after Jamie McGonigle raced clear but Coleman did well to deal with the threat.
And Newry might have regained the advantage later in the half only for Darragh Noonan to strike the woodwork before the ball fell to safety.
Then, towards the end, Coleman pulled off a series of stops in quick succession to deny James McLaughlin and Lowry.

A Philip Donnelly stoppage time header ensured the first ever top flight derby between Newry City and Warrenpoint Town ended with honours even at The Showgrounds. 

Both sides had their chances in the first half.

‘Point came closest after Eamon Scannell picked out Fra McCaffrey but with only Andy Coleman to beat he fired low into the arms of the Newry keeper.

At the other end Stephen Hughes jinked his way forward to the edge of the area before his deflected effort fell just wide of Aaron McCarey’s left post.

But the deadlock was broken three minutes into the second half. Mark McCabe broke into the area but was impeded by Max Kouogun prompting referee Lee Tavinder to award a penalty which Jimmy Walker duly stepped up to convert sending McCarey the wrong way.

That was how it stayed until late in the game. Warrenpoint came closest to levelling when Scannell lifted the ball over from the left side of the area but Kouogun headed narrowly wide.

Then, in the 91st minute, the visitors got their equaliser after Donnelly glanced home Ciaran O’Connor’s cross.

Newry City bounced back from a heavy reversal last week to claim the points from Cliftonville’s visit to The Showgrounds.
The first half was, by and large, bereft of decent scoring efforts and even the best chance of the opening 30 minutes, a Chris Curran attempt after he dispossessed Darren King on the right produced a tame finish.
Curran was involved again not long before the break with a great ball behind the Newry defence to find Joe Gormley but the home rearguard combined to deal with the danger.
What proved to be the only goal of the game arrived on 52 minutes when, from a Mark Hughes free-kick from the left, John Boyle connected with the ball to turn a header through the legs of keeper Richard Brush.
Cliftonville’s afternoon got even worse sixty seconds or so after that with the dismissal of Jamie Harney for bringing down Stefan Lavery just outside the box after he raced on to a Conall Delaney through ball.
Newry might have doubled their advantage with just over a quarter-of-an-hour remaining only for Aaron Donnelly to clear a King effort off the line.
Another chance followed later in the game when Mark McCabe beat Liam Bagnall to a throw-in but, with just the keeper to beat, he couldn’t direct the ball on target.
