Newry crash out of cup!

Newry City will look back on Saturday’s divisional cup semi-final as a match in which they had more than enough chances to have booked their place in the final in the first half and yet can have no gripes with losing to two second half goals from Dungannon Tigers.

Having wrapped up the league title manager Darren Mullen fielded a full strength team for this cup game against a Tigers team who Newry had beaten twice during the league campaign, most recently very comfortably by five goals at home in early March. The early exchanges in Saturdays game did not suggest that anything other than an away victory was on the cards with Newry almost taking the lead with seven minutes gone, Niall Crilly curling a long pass into the path of Neil Barr who’s shot beat the Dungannon keeper only to be cleared on the goal line by a covering defender.

Perhaps Newry should have known that this was not to be their day as their next opportunity on 16 minutes met the same fate. Again Crilly fed Barr who held the ball up before slipping a pass to his partner Mark Patton, Patton’s shot also beating the home keeper but was again blocked on the goal line and cleared despite the best efforts of Crilly who had followed the play. Dungannon’s only scoring chance of the first half came on 17 minutes from a corner which Newry did not clear, Peter Murphy making a smart save low at his near post.

Newry went straight back on attack, Gary McVicker taking the ball from Murphy before making ground and feeding David Anderson. Anderson immediately slipped a defence splitting pass to Barr who’s shot from the edge of the box flew the wrong side of the Tigers post. Sticking with the tactics which have brought so many wins this season Newry continued to build attacking movements from the back. On 25 minutes Crilly was again central, playing a precise pass to the feet of Sean Hand on the edge of the Dungannon box. Hand held the ball up waiting on Crilly’s arrival in the area before sliding a clever pass which gave Crilly a clear sight of goal. With the option of crossing looking favourite Crilly tried to take the Tigers keeper by surprise shooting for his near post, the angle however against the Newry man his shot going wide. The final opportunity of the half came the way of Newry’s captain Chris McMahon. McVicker won the ball in a tackle and immediately found Anderson. Ever alert Anderson spotted McMahon in space on the centre spot. McMahon took the ball to about 30 yards out before shooting low bringing a fine save from the Tigers keeper leaving the match goalless at half time.

The second half started with another Newry chance, again Crilly and Barr linking up to first create a chance for Barr from the edge of the box which was charged down with Barr latching onto the rebound and setting up Anderson, his shot from the corner of the box bringing another save from the Tigers keeper. It was at this stage that the game was to change.

The first sign was a home attack on 56 minutes which brought two excellent saves from Murphy, first diving to palm away a low bouncing shot from outside the box and then reacting quickly to get up and dive at the feet of an in rushing Dungannon forward to deflect the rebound for a corner. Newry went a goal down on the hour mark. Having conceded a free kick on the edge of their own box Newry failed to clear the ball after the free kick had cannoned into the wall, the ball falling to Dungannon’s Brian Somerville who gave Murphy little chance to save with his shot from the middle of the box.

Having secured the all important lead the home side retreated into defensive mode leaving it up to Newry to score. Unfortunately they did everything but with constant pressure on the home defence who were forced to hoof the ball as far up field as possible at every opportunity as well as make some unfortunate challenges which saw the referee award a series of yellow cards and culminated in a straight red card for a horrible challenge on Mark Lowry. However, with all that attacking play Newry really only threatened to score twice in the final half hour.

On 70 minutes a Lowry cross was cleared to about 40 yards out where Conor McCaul met it on the run driving in a technically brilliant shot which never deviated from its flight path which unfortunately was straight into the chest of the keeper, had the shot been a yard either side the Dungannon goal would have undoubtedly been in danger. Newry’s luck was truly gone on 75 minutes when Patton got on the end of a flighted free kick only to see his glancing header slam into the Dungannon post and rebound to safety and Newry’s interest in the cup was effectively ended with five minutes left when a long clearance was latched onto by the solitary Tigers player up field who did well to win a free kick on the edge of the Newry box, Stephen Cusack slamming the free kick past Murphy to send Dungannon into the final.

Newry will reflect that this was a game in which they had the majority of possession and chances but will also know that missing chances leave a team vulnerable to break away goals and that was exactly what happened in this game. However, the defeat must not detract from an excellent debut season from which the objective was to secure promotion.

Cup run beckons for Newry!

Newry City swept aside the challenge of St Mary’s, the only team to beat them in the league this year, to move into the semi-final of the Alan Wilson Cup, the divisional knock out competition. It was clear from the kick off that the points dropped in both league games against St Mary’s were a sore point for the Newry players and they showed their intent by almost taking the lead inside the first minute, Man of the Match Chris McMahon picking up the ball in midfield and playing a one two with David Anderson before firing in a shot which looked destined for the net only to be deflected for a corner.

Newry continued with this high tempo opening and got due reward after six minutes. Building from the back via Niall Crilly and Jimmy Walker the ball was worked to Neil Barr on the corner of the St Mary’s penalty area. Barr beat his covering defender and drove in a low cross which was blocked on the six yard line, the rebound however falling to Sean Hand on the edge of the box, Hand taking one touch before drilling a low shot into the opposite corner of the Dungannon net to put Newry a goal into the lead.

For a period on the fast 3G surface both teams were losing possession through poorly placed passes with play moving swiftly from end to end. With Paul McElroy and Joel Annett on good form at the centre of the Newry defence the away goal was rarely threatened except for crossed balls which were mopped up with ease by Peter Murphy. Newry failed to create another goal scoring chance until the half hour mark when McMahon won the ball in the middle of the field and drove forward before releasing Hand just outside the St Mary’s box. Hand skipped past the challenge of his opposite number, Barry McCann, but chose to shoot when perhaps a crossed ball to the penalty spot was the better option, his shot sailing harmlessly over the cross bar.

The away side were now getting the better of things and threatened again on 36 minutes. Gary McVicker won the ball in defence and fed David Anderson around the half way line. Anderson put his head down and ran at the home right back Mark McKee, Anderson always winning the race with the ball as he bore down on the penalty area. Although appearing to be impeded Anderson was determined to stay on his feet and got inside the penalty area before shooting across goal, his effort beating the far post and going wide. Newry had one final chance to score before half time, a chance which lasted about 15 seconds as the ball bounced around the home penalty area as it was blocked by home defenders and smacked goalwards again by a succession of Newry players eventually ending with a fine diving save from Martin Savage from a Crilly shot, the half ending with Newry leading 1-0.

The second half started slowly and stayed that way to the hour mark mainly due to poorly executed passing on the fast plastic surface. Walker and McMahon in the Newry midfield were enjoying the battle with St Mary’s Gavin McMahon and the evergreen Shane McGeown but good chances at either end were few and far between. The game was kicked into life by a Newry attack on 62 minutes. Mark Patton, who worked tirelessly all evening, won a long Murphy clearance nodding the ball into the path of Barr who was unable to wrap his foot around the ball, his shot flying into Savages side netting. However, much like the first period, after Newry had missed with their first chance they took the next one. Crilly brought the ball out of defence and laid the ball off to Walker. Walker attacked the home box, bouncing his pass off Barr before taking the return and slamming a right foot bullet past Savage to double Newry’s advantage.

The game was won on 82 minutes courtesy of another Crilly foray forward. Again attacking from deep this time the Newry right back feigned to pass but kept going himself until he got to the edge of the home penalty box from where he drove in a low stinging shot towards the far corner of the St Mary’s net, the ball skidding off the plastic pitch just in front of the diving Savage who was able only to palm the ball down, Patton the first to react to the loose ball to put Newry 3-0 up.

In fairness St Mary’s persevered and Newry gave them a lifeline on 87 minutes when a ball which should have been cleared downfield was inexplicably passed back towards Murphy in the Newry goal only to be intercepted in the crowded Newry penalty area. Although Murphy made a splendid diving save from the resulting first shot there was little he could do to prevent St Mary’s scoring from the rebound for what turned out to be a consolation only as referee Gerry Murray, who himself had a good game letting play flow when possible, blew the final whistle which signalled Newry were into the semi-final where they will meet Dungannon Tigers.

Delighted with the prospect of a cup run to end the season Newry manager Darren Mullen was in good spirits after the game “Tonight was a very good performance in what I knew would be a difficult game. St Marys are a good side but I felt we were the better team throughout and ran out deserved winners. Other teams find our fitness levels and high tempo of play difficult to deal with. Hopefully we can carry this good form into the semi- final which will be another tough fixture.”

Newry’s next match will be the Alan Wilson cup semi-final away to Dungannon Tigers. The match will be in Dungannon on Saturday 10th May, kick off @ 2pm. Supporters bus will depart from the Stonebridge at 1pm sharp, all are welcome!!

A tale of penalties and new faces!

With the league title sewn up Newry City set about the task of completing their league programme and preparing for the last cup competition of the season with two games this week, the first at home to Laurelvale on Tuesday, the latter away to Broomhedge on Saturday.

Tuesday was largely an evening of celebration at The Showgrounds when Paul Suckling from the Mid Ulster Football Association presented Newry captain Chris McMahon with the cup for winning Intermediate League B, due reward for the efforts that all associated with the club have put in since it was reformed last year.

As for the game itself it turned out to be something of an anti-climax, perhaps unsurprisingly given that the home side had secured the league on the preceding Saturday. Newry manager Darren Mullen fielded a full strength side for the visit of mid table Laurelvale for a game which Newry would have expected to win and given a normal rub of the green and a few refereeing decisions they would have done so. However the home side had to be content with a point which manager Mullen was keen to excuse given his teams efforts over the season “This was a night of celebration for all at the club being crowned as league champions . Although the result could have been better the players  were entitled to celebrate over the weekend and if that had a bearing on the match then we can live with that. Having said that we had enough chances in the first half to secure the win, went a goal ahead, missed a penalty, were possibly denied one or two more and paid the price near the end”.

After a sloppy first half in which Newry were restricted to a handful of chances the game came to life in the second period which was a story of goals and penalties. Newry went ahead after 53 minutes. David Anderson won a contested header in midfield, Neil Barr latching onto the loose ball. Barr turned infield and laid the ball to the feet of Patton who played a one two with Jimmy Walker before swivelling on the penalty spot and sliding his shot past Ashley Gracey in the Laurelvale net to put Newry 1-0 up. Gracey was to be a central figure in the rest of the game.

On the hour mark Chris McMahon was flattened inside the box by the keeper who completely missed the bouncing ball but did not miss the Newry captain taking him completely out of the game. Inexplicably the referee did not agree first waving play on, then stopping play with the home side in possession to allow McMahon to be treated and bizarrely resumed with a free kick to Laurelvale. Patton almost got his second goal of the game on 70 minutes in a move which he was involved in from start to finish. Instantly controlling a long ball on his chest the big man displayed great skill to first lay the ball back to the over lapping Anderson before controlling the pass back from Mark Lowry and hitting a left foot shot which brought the best out of Gracey as the keeper flung himself to his left to tip the ball over his cross bar for a corner. Gracey was however fortunate to remain on the field on 82 minutes when he came off his line and feet first cynically scythed down Mark Lowry, the referee awarding a penalty but only brandishing a yellow card to Gracey.

Worse was to come for the home team as caught up in the atmosphere of the evening the players gave the penalty to Graeme Edgar who has contributed much to the defensive aspect of Newrys play this season but has yet to score, a statistic which remains as he pulled the spot kick wide of the post. And further agony for the home contingent was to come in the last minute when Jamie Uprichard tucked away a goal with almost the last kick of the game to deny Newry the victory. The result was however put to one side immediately after the final whistle when Chris McMahon raised the league trophy, a fitting finale to his team’s last home game of the season.

For Saturdays away game to Broomhegde Newry made changes to the starting line up from Tuesday but showed the strength in depth that the club have handing out a 4-0 drubbing to the home side. Again this was a game which didn’t come to life until the second half even though Newry almost scored after only 10 seconds. Mark Patton, playing in an unfamiliar role in the centre of midfield won the ball and slipped it to Mark Lowry, about forty yards from goal, Lowry looking up and attempting to chip the Broomhedge keeper who managed to scramble back and tip the ball over his crossbar.

Newry took the lead on five minutes courtesy of Man of the Match Joe Campbell.  Andy McLarty won the ball on the half way line and found Lowry wide on the left. The speedy Lowry skipped down the side line and fired in a driven cross which Campbell met with a firm header at the back post to put Newry 1-0 up. With so much of a changed team it took Newry to the second half before they clicked into gear signalled by an excellent header on 50 minutes by Paul McElroy which had to be cleared off the Broomhedge goal line. Five minutes later the Newry advantage was doubled. Graeme Edgar played a long ball up the middle, the bustling McLarty caused havoc in the home defence leaving Lowry in a race for the ball with the home keeper. With Lowry’s pace there was only going to be one winner in that race, the Newry man rounding the keeper and planting the ball in the net for goal number two.

Chances were now coming thick and fast for Newry. On the hour mark Chris Hughes took the ball down the left wing and crossed to the back post where Campbell controlled instantly and forced an excellent save from the home keeper. Ten minutes later Campbell brought another excellent save from the home keeper after he was again set up at the back post by Anderson, the keeper reacting to palm Campbell’s snapshot round the post. There was little he could do however to prevent goal number three. Again Anderson was central playing a through ball which McLarty beat the off side trap to run onto. McLarty took the ball into the box before slipping a clever pass sideways pass to Chris Hughes who shot first time into the far corner of the net.

Goal number four was similar to three. This time Sean Mooney played a long ball and again McLarty outpaced the home defence. This time McLarty chose to shoot himself and when the keeper could only block his shot Gary McVicker followed up on the edge of the box to thump the rebound into the home goal to seal a 4-0 win for Newry.

After the game Mullen was much more enthused by this performance “Winning the league early and with a few players carrying injuries meant we made a number of changes for this game and I am delighted to see players who maybe did not get the chances they deserved during the season with the team playing so well stepping up to the mark which surely shows the strength of the squad which we have at the club. This now sets us up for a tough game in the cup on Wednesday night which we will go to full of confidence.”

Newry City Champions!!

Newry City secured the Mid Ulster Intermediate League B title with games to spare at Richhill on Saturday. In what has been a tremendous first season for the reformed club, the reserve team having already won the Wilmor Johnston cup, this was the turn of the first team to claim some silverware and more importantly take the first step in a long ladder in their quest to bring senior football back to the city of Newry.

Obviously many people have worked long and hard to get the club to this point but none more so than the visionary manager Darren Mullen who perhaps had the biggest smile after Saturdays win “It’s been a terrific end to a long 20 months since we decided to reform the club. A lot of work has gone on both on and off the field in that time. I told the players before the game that they had the chance to create a bit of history and that’s exactly what they did. We have been the best team in the league and we will look forward to receiving the league trophy on Tuesday night. It gives our loyal fans, sponsors and all those who helped us rebuild something to celebrate after all that has gone on at the club.”

As for the game itself, as with so many of the previous games this season, Newry played some terrific passing football and ran out convincing 4-0 winners. They almost went a goal in the lead after only four minutes when Conor McCaul rose highest to win a Jimmy Walker corner only to see his effort cleared off the goal line by a Richhill defender stationed at his back post. The game swung immediately to the other end of the field for the home side’s best chance of the day which needed a goal line clearance from Niall Crilly, for the second game in a row, to keep the Newry goal secure.

The opening goal was not long coming. On seven minutes Neill Barr, on the edge of the box with his back to goal, controlled a pass from Chris McMahon before laying it back to Jimmy Walker. Walker worked his way across the edge of the box to create a shooting angle before shooting low into the corner of the Richhill net to put Newry 1-0 up. Mark Patton & Chris McMahon Celebrate

Newry doubled the advantage on 22 minutes through Mark Patton. Crilly was again involved battling down the right wing to win a throw in which he took himself. Patton, who has been in tremendous goal scoring form of late, rose majestically to power a header from the middle of the penalty area past the helpless Richhill keeper to put Newry well on their way to securing the points. Crilly almost grabbed a goal for himself on the half hour mark and a picture goal it would have been. Gary McVicker floated a ball from the half way line to Barr who nodded it down to Patton on the edge of the box. Patton spotted Crilly steaming up from his right back position and laid the ball into his path, Crilly drilling his shot from 30 yards out inches over the home crossbar.

The game was over as a contest on 56 minutes thanks to Barr’s 29th goal of the season. McMahon sprayed the ball wide to Crilly who took a moment to look up and with the defence expecting a long cross to Patton at the back post Crilly picked out Barr at the front, Newry’s top scorer stooping to head the low cross into the top corner of the net.

Jimmy Walker MOTM

The best goal of the day was manufactured by the Man of the Match Jimmy Walker on 70 minutes. The Newry midfield maestro who had given an exhibition of ball skills all day picked the ball up on the half way line and skipped past tackle after tackle as he took the ball to the by line before pulling it back across goal where it was met on the volley by Mark Lowry who deftly flicked it past the Richill keeper for the fourth and final goal of the game.

From that moment on the 90th minute could not come soon enough for the large contingent of Newry supporters who joined in with the players on the pitch for scenes of celebration on the final whistle.

However with three league games and hopefully a cup run to come its back to business for the players on Tuesday night when they will be presented with the league trophy after the home match against Laurelvale which kicks off at the Newry Showgrounds at 19:30. Tonights match at the Showgrounds is FREE in for everyone:
