Newry senior team travelled to Maynooth on Saturday for a pre-season friendly against Leinster League Division one side Maynooth Town FC. Although Newry lost the game 1-0, there were many positives to take from the game such as a solid display from debutant goalkeeper Peter Murphy and a Man of the Match performance from midfield dynamo Paul Daly.

Next up for Newry is another friendly, this time against Mid Ulster Division One team Ambassadors of Portadown. K.O is 2.30pm at the Showgrounds, Saturday 3rd July.

The game started with the home team on the front foot creating three good chances for the opening goal. First up was Peter Thompson who had his shot saved by Daniel Rowney in the Armagh goal after he was played in by full back Niall Crilly. This was soon followed by a fleeting opportunity for debutant Paul McElroy who saw his shot turned away once again by Rowney. From the resultant corner John Smyth’s right footed drive grazed the cross bar.

Armagh soon found their feet and the game swung in their favour. Having dominated the play for the previous 15 minutes the away team took the lead after 35 minutes when Chris Maxwell worked his way into the Newry box and drove the ball past Newry’s debutant goalkeeper Ryan Graham for the game’s opening goal.

Newry responded well and had a chance to equalise just on half time when the two Smyth’s, John and Chris combined to force a corner which Paul Daly narrowly headed over.

Newry made 3 changes at half time, which combined with the half time team talk from manager Darren Mullen, seemed to give a fresh impetus to the team. Now operating with two speedy front men the home team gave Armagh no time to settle on the ball. This approach nearly paid early dividends when Daly and Chris McMahon combined neatly in midfield to release Mark Lowry on the wing and his low cross was smothered by Sean Morgan in the Armagh goal.

Newry continued to make the running and reaped the reward when the ball broke, from a strong challenge in midfield by Conor McCaul, to Crilly who drove forward to the edge of the Armagh box before squaring to the free Lowry. Taking one touch to control Lowry blasted the ball high to the keepers right and into the Armagh net for the first senior goal for Newry City AFC.

Newry now on the crest of a wave soon went two up when Shane Lundy rose majestically to head Jimmy Walkers corner to the Armagh net.

Lundy was involved soon afterwards in the final goal of the day. After beating two opponents on the left wing his cross was met by Walker who’s shot hit the post but the ball fell to the waiting Chris Smyth who finished to the net despite the despairing dive of Morgan to complete a deserved victory for Newry.

Newrys next two fixtures are away from home. On Tuesday they travel to Oriel Park, Dundalk to play a Dundalk XI and on Saturday next they make the journey to Maynooth for another challenge match.

Newry City AFC continued their preparations for the new season with what proved to be an entertaining and keenly contested challenge game against Cliftonville FC at the Showgrounds on Thursday night. The visitors, fresh from a Champions League qualifier against Glasgow Celtic the previous evening, paid Newry the respect of fielding a team which contained six players who played first team football in their Premiership winning team of last season.

For the new season The Showgrounds is in sparkling condition with the playing surface perfect for free flowing football which suited both teams. The away team soon made use of the conditions with neat interplay which needed the timely intervention of Newrys centre half Conor McCaul who snuffed out the threat. Indeed this was an early glimpse of what was to come as both McCaul and his partner Joel Annett were the top performers of the evening for Newry.

The home team were also posing a threat at the other end and soon manufactured a gilt edged chance for the first goal for the new club. Peter Thompson, a strong running attacker beat two defenders in his foray from the half way line and while it looked much like he had run into a cul de sac he was able to pull the ball back to Conor McCaul who’s driven cross struck a defenders hand for a clear penalty.  Unfortunately Chris McMahon who has had an excellent preseason saw his penalty strike the outside of the post and go wide.

Undaunted, Newry continued to attack and had another good chance when a long cross from full back John Smyth was headed back into the box by the industrious Jimmy Walker to Gareth Hughes who blasted narrowly over.

Cliftonville took the lead in the 37^th minute when a cross from the right wing was only half cleared to Darmuid O’Carroll who took the ball into the box and rounded Morley-Hillen in the home nets to put Cliftonville 1-0 up. Newry bounced back and on the stroke of half time a strong run from Shane Lundy set up John Smyth who’s left wing cross come shot deceived Barnett in the Cliftonville net who was relieved to see the ball slip over the cross bar.

Whilst the second half was evenly contested Newry perhaps had the clearer openings and continued to be solid at the back with the Louth County GAA keeper, Shane McCoy now between the sticks. Soon after the restart a long through ball from Annett gave Thompson a one on one against Barnett who deflected the shot for a corner. This was soon followed by a chance for Walker created by the tough tackling Lundy. Alas Walker was crowded out inside the box by the Cliftonville defence. And so the game flattened out except for a late breakaway goal from John Donnelly for Cliftonville to make the final score 2-0.

It was an all round good team performance from Newry – in a game were the positives far outweighed the negatives.

Man of the match: Conor McCaul
