Legend Departs From The Showgrounds

Players come and players go but some players are different, some just have that wee thing about them that makes them special. Sean McMullan epitomises this. A breath of fresh air into the club 3 seasons ago, a presence on and off the field that helped bring the club to where it is today. An inspired signing by Manager Darren Mullen who is only too pleased to recognise Seans impact at Newry as he moves into the next phase of his career.

‘In my 4 years of managing the team there hasn’t been another player who has made such a positive impact both on and off the pitch. His goals have been well documented and without them we would not be playing Irish league football again. Not only has he been brilliant for us on the pitch but has been a real positive influence off it helping some of the younger players in the squad. He has been a larger than life character who has left some brilliant memories some of which couldn’t be published! I will miss him not only as a player but also as a good friend and I wish him every success at my old club Windmill Stars. He will be forever welcome at The Showgrounds.’

Sean McMullan added ‘First off all I’d like to thank Darren Mullen and Newry City for giving me the opportunity to play for a great club. The support I’ve received in the last three seasons has been unreal! I’m very proud and perhaps lucky to have not only played for but won leagues titles, gained promotions,  won cups and won top scorer awards with the two biggest and best clubs in the area. The relationship I had with the Newry fans is something I’ll always be proud of and that’s coming from an ex Warrenpoint player and fan which shows how good the people at Newry have been to me! I’m leaving the club purely for footballing reasons as at my age I need to be playing regularly. I would like to sign off by saying thanks for everything to everyone who has helped me along the way at NCAFC! Newry Abu.’

Rambo Signs for City

Already building for next season tonight Newry unveiled Stephen Hughes as Manager Darren Mullens first signing of the summer.

Speaking to Newry City AFC.co.uk Stephen commented, “I can’t wait to get started, it’s great that it’s a team made up largely of local players some of whom I’ve played with before. The facilities at the club are brilliant with one of the best pitches in the Irish League. Since being with Newry City FC I’ve gained more experience playing at a higher level with Warrenpoint Town and Portadown and now the club is going in the right direction and I want to be part of that and get that one more promotion to get into the Premier League. Whether that happens next season or after that, we will work hard to get there. All being well I’ll finish my career at Newry in the Premiership.”

Newry Manager Darren Mullen “To sign someone of Rambo’s ability shows the progress we are making at the club. Once we knew he was available we moved quickly and are delighted to have him back at his hometown club. Moving up to The Championship will be a lot tougher for us but having players of Rambo’s ability will only strengthen us. I’m sure the fans will be delighted as are the current players who he knows well. Seeing him back in a Newry jersey is a great boost for the club and I’m looking forward to working with him next season.”

Tony Scappaticci R.I.P

It is with deep regret that Newry City AFC has heard of the untimely passing of former Newry Town player Tony Scappaticci. A minutes silence will be observed prior to the 7.45KO against Armagh City tomorrow night. The thoughts of everyone at Newry City AFC are with Tonys family at this very sad time.

Roared on by an enthusiastic support at The Showgrounds the City lads came from behind to win this enthralling encounter and at the same time bagged the MUFL Reserve Championship Title. A strong Coagh side took the lead in the 8th minute with a great strike that gave home keeper Marty Marron absolutely no chance.

Three minutes later the visitors were awarded a penalty but Marty Marron made a superb save to keep the homesters in the game.

City retaliated and in the 14th minute Marcus McKeown accepted a Jordan King pass to slip in a deserved equaliser. McKeown was looking dangerous in an unfamiliar striking role for City and he came close again but keeper William Hassen saved well for Coagh. Paulius Smaryginas smashed in a great 30 yarder to put Newry in front at the 20 min mark. City with Chris McMahon, Josh Durnin and Ryan Quinn all in top form dominated the midfield exchanges as half time was reached.

Minutes after the resumption Marcus McKeown put Newry further ahead with a clever finish and in the 68th minute Chris McMahon blasted in a penalty to put Newry 4-1 up. Although Coagh came back strongly to reduce the arrears the City lads were totally focused and determined to finish as winners and took the title in style amidst jubilant scenes at the finish.

Newry City Reserve Manager, Gary Redpath commented “This was a fantastic day for the club, we won every home league game this season but the last three league games have shown me how far this group have grown individually and collectively.

We have come through three games of high quality and intensity and even though Coagh put out a very strong, experienced team, we came back from a goal down and really deserved the win. I would also like to thank my team of Kevin D’Arcy, Marty McParland and Barry Treanor who have been fantastic.”

Newry City Reserve Captain, Ryan Quinn “It feels so good to say that we won the league, we have played well all season and I believe it was fully deserved. The other thing is Gary and the boys have us playing passing football, so every game has been really enjoyable. Anyone who has been at our games have been entertained.

It’s a great achievement for such a young squad with the average age of 20, I hope that winning the league will help show people that there are good young local lads coming through for Newry.  Hopefully now the first team can play to their best in the play offs next week and bring more success to the club, I wish them the best of luck.

Newry Manager Darren Mullen “I’m delighted for Gary and the rest of the lads involved with the reserve team as I know how much time and effort they put into it. To win a league title at any level is never easy but they have won it playing some very good football and those young lads will be all the better for this experience.

We need good young local players coming through and Gary has nurtured some good potential within his squad. Hopefully that will continue for the coming years but for now they will rightly enjoy some deserving success.”

Club Captain Chris McMahon commented “Massive congratulations to our reserve team who won the league title on Saturday. Not many players get the opportunity to win a league in their careers so it is a great achievement. This was only able to happen through the entire squads commitment throughout the year. They have a great coaching setup in place and they also deserved this success. It’s a great sign for the club in the future with the quality coming through.”
