Newry City AFC Golf Classic a huge success
Newry City AFC hosted what proved to be a hugely successful golf classic in association with the Eamonn Morgan Trust at Warrenpoint Golf Club last week.
Over 35 teams took part in the four-man scramble event with the sun coming out to make for an enjoyable day on the course for all who played.
With two events running on the day for both GUI members and Non-GUI golfers, competition was fierce throughout with some top-class prizes for those on offer.
The top prize in the GUI competition, won by the fourball of Michael Carr, Ruairi Carr, Micheal Rice and Adrian Farrell was a fourball at the world-famous Portmarnock Links plus an overnight stay.
They just pipped the group of Gerry McGuigan, Pat Taylor, Brian McGuigan and Paddy Digby, who won a fourball at The K Club (Smurfit Course), while a round at Greenore Golf Club was the prize for the third-place team of Garrett Hughes, Paul Greenan, Gary Sands and Fergal McConville.
In the Non-GUI event, City first team player Ian Curran, Colm Heaney and Linfield pair Mark Haughey and Ross Gaynor took victory and with it the prize of a fourball and food at Mannan Castle Golf Club.
They beat the team of Neil McCullough, Paul McCullough, Kieran Donnelly and Gareth McCullough into second place, who picked up a fourball at host club Warrenpoint for their efforts.
As well as being part of the third-placed team in the GUI competition, Paul Greenan took the longest drive at the 4th hole, while Neil Wilson, from the B Wilson and Sons group was closest to the pin at the 14th. Both won £50 vouchers for the Warrenpoint Golf Club Pro Shop.
Ballyholland Harps GFC player Robbie White was the winner of the putting competition, earning himself a £25 voucher for the pro shop.
The club and organisers would like to thank the main sponsor for the classic, Peadar McCoy and Peak Electric for their contribution to what was a great day.
We would also like to thank associate sponsors NW Kehoe and Sons, B Wilson and Sons and Noreast Beers Ltd, along with everyone who sponsored a hole at the event for their contribution.
