Newry hammer five past Craigavon!

With a defence superbly marshalled by Man of the Match Paul Donegan Newry City finally got their league campaign up and running with a comprehensive five goal thumping of AFC Craigavon at The Showgrounds on Saturday. With only one point secured from the two league games already played this was just the result that the Newry boys needed to kick start their first season in Mid Ulster Intermediate A.

That said it took an early intervention from keeper Peter Murphy to stop Craigavon taking an early lead when Ryan Haddock wriggled free inside the box, Murphy quickly off his line to block Haddocks shot with his legs.

The Newry response was swift, Keith Johnston bursting down the right wing, his run only halted when he was hauled down wide of the penalty area. Quick of feet and thought Johnston took a short free to Jimmy Walker who forced the Craigavon keeper Geogheghan into a fine save from inside the box. The reprieve to the Craigavon goal did not last long as Newry opened the scoring with their next attack. Neil Barr controlled a long pass from defence, spun his marker and although forced wide of the goal as he skipped past the advancing Geoghegan, Barr composed himself on the end line to pick out his partner Sean McMullan who got free from his marker to side foot Barr’s cross to the empty net to put Newry 1-0 up.

Having now ended his five game goal drought McMullan had enough chances to grab a hat trick within five minutes. On 24 minutes Chris Fay worked hard to retrieve a ball which had gone across the face of the Craigavon goal and was heading for a throw in on the other side. Fay turned back on goal and picked out McMullan with a chipped cross which the big man did well to get power into but was unfortunate to see his header hit the underside of the crossbar. Two minutes later the striker had another chance, Johnston broke from the half way line showing Coleman a clean pair of heals. Level with the penalty area Johnston whipped in a cross which first evaded Barr at the front post but fell to the backing up McMullan who was unfortunate to find Geogheghan with his snap shot.

Newry doubled their advantage on 36 minutes in a sweeping movement which started with Graeme Edgar at left back and ended with Johnston on the right wing swinging in a cross for which Fay rose highest at the back post to bullet his header into the roof of the Craigavon goal.

Two nil up at half time Newry sealed the points 10 minutes into the second half. Taking a short corner from Fay, Jimmy Walker whipped in a low cross which went through a ruck of players and seemed to be heading out of the box only for Donegan to react quickest getting to the ball just before a Craigavon defender who, now committed to the challenge, took the Newry man down. With the referee having little option but to award a penalty up stepped Fay to blast his spot kick high into the top corner to put Newry 3-0 up.

With Newry completely dominant in possession and with Donegan and Chris McMahon urging against any complacency more goals looked sure to come.

Midfielder Ryan Quinn certainly looked to have got the message from his captain when he harassed a mistake from the Craigavon defence as they attempted to hold possession, the breaking ball falling to Newry playmaker Walker 30 yards from goal. As only Walker can he held up the ball before chipping a delightful pass which landed on the chest of centre forward McMullan who controlled the ball and turned away from two markers in one movement before shooting home from the middle of the penalty area to put Newry four goals clear with 25 minutes left.

Newry almost conceded a goal and also almost scored one of the goals of the season, both within 30 seconds on 80 minutes.

First in a rare break away Craigavon threatened to score only to be thwarted by Murphy who again was quickly of his line to spread his frame and smother the shot. Regaining his feet Murphy rolled the ball to Niall Crilly who in turn released the speedster Johnston. In a flash Johnston was down the wing and swinging over a cross which curled back to the edge of the box where David O’Connor met it on the run, his volley thumping of the crossbar with the beaten Geogheghan motionless. The final goal of the game came late on and appropriately it went to Johnston who had enjoyed an excellent performance. Aaron Brilly, keen to impress having been introduced as a substitute, came deep to pick up the ball and made ground into the Craigavon half before neatly finding Walker. Instantly Walker released Barr who’s first time shot could only be palmed up in the air by Geogheghan, Walker the first to react to the rebound controlling the looping ball and slipping a pass to Johnston who blasted his low shot to the net to seal a 5 goal win.

In all a thoroughly deserved victory for Newry in a game in which at last they turned the hard work and incessant passing into goals. Newry manager Darren Mullen had clearly sounded a warning to his players “We are gathering a big squad now and the players know that they have to be playing at the top of their game to be in the team. In recent games with the possession and the chances we have been creating I knew that it was only a matter of time before we had a big win and thankfully that proved to be the case.”

Newry City’s next game is next Saturday, 4th October at home to Donard Hospital in the 2nd round of the Irish Cup.

Newry City Ladies complete Historic Double

The Newry City Ladies team capped off a fantastic season earlier this month at Holm Park in Armagh when a hat trick from Captain Aoife Lennon eased them to a 3-1 win over Sion Swifts in the final of the Championship League Cup. This completed a remarkable double for the Ladies team after they won all but one of their league games to help them to a fourth successive league title in as many years. The Ladies were also very unlucky not to make a clean sweep of all trophies when they lost out on penalties to Linfield Ladies in the final of the Irish Cup.

Newry City Ladies Manager James Feehan told newrycityafc.co.uk he is delighted with how the season went and looks forward to the challenges that lie ahead.

“Our goal when we started off in Division four in 2010 was to one day play in the Premiership and we are delighted to have achieved this in such a short space of time. The girls also did great to reach the final of the Irish Cup this year – it was a great experience for them. It was a cruel way to lose out on penalties but it will make the girls even more determined next season.

“We’d obviously love to win the Premiership at some stage but our main aim next season is to finish as high in the table as we can and build on it the following year. Anything else is a bonus. In our cup matches with Premiership sides in the past couple of seasons we have shown that we can more than hold our own with them so they know that we will be no walkover”.

James is pleased with the team’s progress but equally he would like to see support for the girls continue to grow.

“We have a loyal band of supporters but new faces are always welcome down to the Showgrounds. We are hoping that local people will come out in force next season to cheer the girls on in their first season in the Premiership. Most of our squad are also playing international football which means we can offer a high standard of football. All of our league matches are free entry also so it is a great opportunity for people to come down and cheer on their local club at no expense”.

Newry City AFC Chairman Martin McLoughlin said that the Club are proud of the girls’ achievements to date.

“It’s great to see Newry City Ladies progressing so well – it’s been a dream season for them this year”, Martin told newrycityafc.co.uk

“They were also very unlucky to lose out on penalties in the Irish Cup final. Everybody at the club is very proud of their achievements thus far and we wish them well in their new league campaign next season”.

Newry Men’s Senior Team Manager Darren Mullen echoed Martin’s sentiments.

“It’s been another terrific year for James and The ladies team who are going from strength to strength. Anyone who has seen them play this year could not help but be impressed by the standard of football that they play. To win a league and cup double is never easy and great credit must go to all involved. They have done the club proud this season”.

Newry U14 3- 2 Killowen U14

by Colm Murphy, Newry City U14 Manager

Newry City played their first league match of the year away to Killowen Celtic. Both teams played an open entertaining game in a very sporting manner and it was Newry that started out of the blocks the quickest when Matthew McGinn slipped a neat pass that split the Killowen defence allowing Sean Mc Conville to slide the ball past the keeper. Things got better for Newry 10 minutes later when Tiarnan Murphy played a looped ball over the head of the Killowen back line for Tiernan O’Reilly to side foot past the on rushing keeper making it 2-0 to Newry.

The remainder of the half saw Killowen play a number of long balls in on top Newry’s defence but were unable to really trouble the away team’s goalkeeper.

The second half started with Killowen playing more ground football and a number of attacks nearly paid off only for the sharpness of the Newry defence and stand in keeper Nathan Crudden who put the keepers jersey on due to the regular keeper being injured.

From a quick break away the Newry forwards caught Killowen standing still at the back and were nearly in for their third goal only for a foul on Tiernan Reilly. Tiarnan Murphy played an excellent cross in from the resulting free kick which fell to Joseph Connolly who turned his marker and slotted into the net to make it 3-0!!

Although 3 nil down, Killowen never gave up and were rewarded soon after with a penalty. The resulting kick hit the post but Newry were not quick enough to the rebound and Killowen scored to make it 3-1.

The last 10 minutes were played at a frantic pace and again Killowen were rewarded with quick thinking and slid a ball through to make it 3-2! A tense final few minutes followed but Newry held out for a win!
It was great to see both teams giving their all and Killowen can take heart from a good team effort and will cause many teams problems as the league continues. Newry had many good individual performances on the day but overall it was team work that won this match. Hopefully we can bring this forward to our next game but in the end it was a great start to the league campaign!!

Johnston nets late winner for City

Newry City gave a much improved display on Friday night to ease past Banbridge Rangers in the 1st round of the Mid Ulster Cup.  On the front foot from the first whistle Newry had enough chances to have enjoyed a much more comfortable evening but in the end had ace goal scorer Keith Johnston to thank for a late winner.

Mark Lowry
Mark Lowry netted his 8th goal of the season

The home side got off to the best possible start with Mark Lowry scoring after 7 minutes. With Rangers playing with a high back line they were susceptible to a long ball over the top to the fast Newry forwards and it wasn’t long until Newry took advantage, Ian Curran pitching a ball into the opposing half which Chris Fay latched onto. Unopposed, Fay took the ball to the end line before firing in a low cross which was met by Lowry at the back post, Lowry deflecting the ball to the net for his 8th goal of the season.

Conversely Graeme Edgar has yet to score for Newry and on the half hour mark it looked as if he was going to break his duck. From left back Edgar went on a marauding run skipping past a few challenges before laying the ball to the feet of centre forward Sean McMullan. McMullan back heeled to Ryan Quinn who in turn laid the ball into the path of Edgar who had continued his run into the box. Now with only the keeper to beat Edgar attempted to curl his shot to the far post alas pulling his effort into the keeper’s body.

For their part Banbridge Rangers rarely looked like getting past the Newry defence and with Peter Murphy looking assured under any high crosses the home goal was rarely threatened in the first half.

Newry continued to push forward in their attempt to add to the one goal lead. On 44 minutes it was the turn of Niall Crilly to use his pace to get behind the Banbridge defence. Faced with that high defensive line Crilly knocked the ball past the last defender before regaining possession and flashing in a low cross which was just out of the reach of the sliding Johnston. And Johnston was to have another chance before half time. Jimmy Walker, who looked back to his best in midfield knocked the ball wide to Lowry who took a touch before crossing to Johnston, the Newry man unable to get enough power into his header to beat McMinn in the Rangers goal.

Straight from the restart Newry created another great chance and again it was Walker finding Lowry who pulled his cross back to Johnston unmarked on the edge of the 6 yard box, the striker unable to find the target with his effort.

At this point the game began to open up with chances coming thick and fast. On the hour mark Banbridge almost equalized when a long ball caught the Newry defence flat with Cousins left with a free run on the Newry goal. Murphy committed himself to come from his line to narrow the shooting angle, his decision vindicated when Cousins effort hit the Newry side netting. At the other end it was the Banbridge defence turn to be caught flat when a long pass from Chris McMahon placed Lowry with a run on goal, the ball however bouncing high causing him to lash his shot well wide. Rangers were threatening to equalize and looked likely to score on 65 minutes only for a last ditch tackle from Edgar saving the moment for Newry. However the escape was short lived as minutes later Rangers winger Frazer took the ball down the left wing and rolled a pass into the path of Andy Mallen, who’s perfectly struck low shot from the edge of the box gave Murphy little chance as it flashed past him into the back of the Newry goal.

The home side’s reaction to being pegged back will have pleased manager Darren Mullen. Walker who was unflappable in possession, linked up again with Lowry, who swung in a high cross from which Barr challenged, the ball falling to Fay at the back post but the winger was unfortunate to see his shot deflected wide.

Keith Johnston grabbed the winner on Friday night

Newry continued to press and with 10 minutes left goal-getter Barr almost grabbed the winner. Lowry showed great endeavour to chase a long ball which forced a mistake from a Banbridge defender as he tried to shepherd the ball out, the ball falling to Barr inside the box and with everyone expecting a shot across goal, Barr blasted to the near top corner, McMinn showing great reflexes to palm the shot wide. Rangers again relied on McMinn to deny Lowry after he was set free on goal by a fabulous diagonal ball from Edgar which landed perfectly at the Newry mans feet on the right corner of the box, McMinn blocking Lowry’s shot with his legs. However, Lowry was not to be denied. With minutes left he was again released by a perfect long pass from McMahon and while Lowry appeared to be fouled inside the box in the act of shooting the loose ball fell to Walker on the edge of the box. Composed as ever the Newry playmaker slipped a through ball to Johnston who got just reward for his evenings endeavour as he clinically slid the ball past McMinn to win the game for Newry.

Newry manager Mullen was clearly content with the win, “We started the game at a great tempo and should have had the game wrapped up at half time. Offensively we were good and looked very solid at the back. We should have doubled the lead straight after the break and had other chances to extend the lead. But then we let Banbridge back into it and while we could have felt sorry for ourselves the lads dug deep and we ran out worthy winners with all 14 players deserving praise in what was a good win”.
