Last Man Standing Round 3 results

Apologies for the slight delay in posting round three results.

Week 3 of Newry City AFC’s Last Man Standing has thrown another shock to the remaining participants with Chelsea, Spurs and Everton all failing to win. Reigning Last Man Standing champion John Prentice has bowed out of this years competition, and he won’t be happy that it was the team he follows who let him down.

Moving on to round 4, we have just 12 people remaining in the competition and anything can happen from here on in, based on some of the results we have seen over the last few weeks. Of the 12 remaining, 50% have chosen Manchester United this week who take on Sunderland at Old Trafford. Stoke, West Ham, Southampton and West Brom making up the other selections.

Lauren Redpath is flying the flag for the female supporters of the club and is hoping for a Man United win to progress to the fifth round. While Patrick Higgins will be hoping that Southampton are able to get the three points against West Brom, whereas Chris Taylor will be hoping West Brom come out on top.

With only 12 people remaining, things are starting to get very interesting with a lot of top sides already ruled out for most people. Good luck to the remaining participants.

Below are people the remaining twelve people’s selections for round 4.

Last Man Standing round 2 results

So after the second round of fixtures we have whittled the competition down to just 35 people. With Man City failing to win at home against Hull City, the Merseyside derby ending in a scoreless draw and Arsenal losing out to North London rivals Tottenham, we had quite a lot of fallers.

Still in the game we have current Last Man Standing champion John Prentice who squeezed through after Southampton scored a last minute winner away to QPR. Also still in is Liam Murphy who is yet to use any of the big guns, having progressed so far with Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

There is still all to play for with some tough fixtures coming up this weekend also.

Last Man Standing round 1 results

Newry City AFC last man standing competition for 2015 is finally underway and we began on Saturday past with 127 entrants. Reigning Last Man Standing champion John Prentice is eager to defend his title this time around and is safely through to this week’s second round having seen his pick Manchester United defeat Leicester City.

The first casualty of the competition was Jonny Lennon who took a risk on Hull to beat Newcastle. However Newcastle ran out easy winners in Saturdays early kick off.

Of the 127 entrants, 25 have already ploughed out of the competition with the biggest exodus backing Southampton to win. However the 18 participants who had chosen The Saints were let down and face an early exit.

With 25 people bowing out already after week 1, we are down to 102 people remaining. With some big teams chosen for weeks 1 and 2, and how unpredictable results have been in recent weeks, almost anything could happen from here.

How long have you supported Newry? 29 years, since I was four years old.

How did you come about supporting the club?
Family tradition. My late Grandfather was a former Chairman, President and Trustee who helped broker the deal for Pat Jennings to begin his professional career and my Dad has supported Newry for nearly 60 years. It’s in my blood!

Your favourite ever player?
Impossible to pick just one from those I have seen – John Corvan was the first player I remember seeing and being amazed by. Joey Cunningham for his sheer ability on the pitch and his personality off it. The living legend that is Ollie Ralph – Goalscorer supreme and one of the nicest people I have had the fortune to meet. Stuart McClean – a colossus at centre-back and the best defender I have seen in a Newry shirt bar none and Richard Clarke – came to the club as a youngster with potential and left as one of the best midfielders in the country.

Favourite current player?
Every player that pulls on a Newry shirt is an instant favourite and gets my support. The lads currently at the club are arguably the most important bunch to pull on the blue and white stripes.

Best memory supporting the club?
Following the team into Europe in 1999. Never thought I would be watching my club playing a Bundesliga team in European football. Also, winning Division 1 was fantastic and the following season beating Linfield, Cliftonville and Portadown was brilliant. Thousands at The Showgrounds. The three trophies we won in Championship 1 a couple of seasons ago was as enjoyable a season as any however. Also, last season in Intermediate B was great fun.

Funniest moment supporting the club?
There are almost too many to mention. Getting into plenty of heated debates with opposition supporters and players is always a laugh. Jonny Ferns going on his backside at ‘Stute on the pitch is as much of a highlight as any of the away days I’ve been on. Plenty of jokers on the bus!

Favourite ground you’ve visited and why?
Hard to look past Mourneview Park or Stangmore Park. Both are compact grounds where you are close to the action and both are good for a pre-match, half-time and post-match beer too! Mourneview just edges it for me though. However, from a results point of view, our 6-4 win at Dungannon a few years ago was up there with the best. Clarkey celebrating with the fans after the sixth goal was brilliant.

What is it you like most about following Newry?
The fact that it’s my local team and the only team that I can truly genuinely say I have affinity to. I like watching matches on TV or going to Old Trafford for example as much as anyone, but nothing beats going to watch your home town team with your mates, seeing friends playing for the club.

Hopes for the future?
That we continue to progress up the leagues until eventually returning to our rightful place in the Premiership. However, it’s more important that the club continues to be run correctly, the way it is at the minute, and that only those who genuinely care for it are allowed to make decisions.
Also, I hope Graeme Edgar can find out where the net is sooner rather than later too!
